“YONEX-SUNRISE Hong Kong Open Badminton Championships 2019” continued its second day of programme at Hong Kong Coliseum today (Nov 13). Hong Kong player Yip Pui-yin lost in straight sets to An Se Young, the 17-year-old rising star from South Korea, in the first round. Yip, who is at the end of her career, said she cherishes every chance of playing. In Men’s Singles, Wang Tsu-wei and Jonatan Christie both reached the next round.

The 32-year-old Yip took on the 17-year-old Korean up-and-coming player, An Se Young, today. With a slow start, Yip once trailed behind at 0:10 before An pocked the first set at 21:9. Despite an early lead in the second set, Yip was not able to maintain her momentum and fend off the comeback from An, before losing the set at 14:21.

Though Yip was definitely a more experienced player between the duo, she said: “She is only 17 years old but she has had outstanding results against strong opponents in previous tournaments. So I have expected it would be a tough battle today.” Yip also remarked her recent game has not been satisfactory, and she will cherish every chance of playing as she is getting close to retirement.

In Men’s Singles, Wang Tsu-wei from Chinese Taipei played against Sameer Verma in the first round match. Wang took the first set at 21:11 after scoring eight consecutive points in the middle of the set. Though Verma tied the match by grabbing the second set, Wang took the initiative again in the third set at 21:8, and advanced to the next round. After the match, Wang said he lost the second set because of playing with the drift. “Due to the drift, I played rather conservatively in the second set and slowed my game, putting myself in a situation that I had to follow the rhythm of my opponent. Luckily, I found my own tempo again in the deciding set and was able to prevail at the end,” he said.

Jonatan Christie, No. 6 seeded player from Indonesia, faced Vincent Wong Wing-ki in the first round. Despite a lead of 10 points, Christie lost the first set to Wong at 20:22. Adjusting his game, he was able to overcome the Hong Kong player in the following two sets at 21:14, 21:13. Advancing to the next round, Christie said after the match Wong was a tough opponent. “This match was really challenging. Although I once led 10 points in the first set, my opponent kept scoring and came from behind to snatch the first set. Thus, I had to be more concentrated in the next two sets,” he said. Eliminated at the quarterfinals last year at the Hong Kong Open, Christie hopes this year’s result could at least match last year’s, and today’s match reminded him to be more cautious in future matches against other strong opponents.
