“YONEX-SUNRISE Hong Kong Open Badminton Championships 2019 part of the HSBC BWF World Tour Super 500” will kick off next month, where players will vie for points for qualifying the Tokyo Olympics. As usual, there is a star-dusted line-up again this year, including Kento Momota from Japan and Pusarla Venkata Sindhu from India, the reigning title holders of World Championships in Men’s Singles and Women’s Singles, who will compete for the accolades.

Kento Momota, aged 25, is definitely the most red-hot badminton player nowadays, after making history for Japan by clinching his first World Championship title last year and becoming the world’s number 1 in Men’s Singles. He has remained dominant in 2019 by winning eight out of 12 tournaments so far this year, including defending his World Championship title. Momota was stopped before the final in Hong Kong Open last year, after conceding defeat to Korean Son Wan-Ho in 1:2 in the semi-final. He will return this year, striving to bring home the top honour!

Pusarla Venkata Sindhu has accumulated numerous accolades after topping the Junior World Badminton Championships in 2012, and become the top-notch player from Southern Asia. However, she lost all the finals in the World Championships 2017 and 2018, and the 2016 Rio Olympics, earning her a reputation of the “female version of Lee Chong Wei”. Despite the hardship, Sindhu has maintained an unyielding fighting spirit, and she finally achieved her dream by winning the World Badminton Championships this year, turning a new page for the history of Indian badminton. Ranked as the world number 3 at the moment, Sindhu has participated in Hong Kong Open for numerous times, including grabbing a silver medal in both 2016 and 2017. After losing unexpectedly in the second round last year, she comes back again this time as the reigning world champion. Everyone should wait and see whether she will be crowned at Hong Kong Coliseum for the first time.
