“YONEX-SUNRISE Hong Kong Open Badminton Championships 2019 part of the HSBC BWF World Tour Super 500” once again has attracted a number of world-class players will be held from 12th to 17th November at Hong Kong Coliseum this year. Fierce battles are expected in the first round of Men’s Singles. Highlight matches includes defending champion Korean Son Wan-ho take on Danish Viktor Axelsen and World No.1 Japanese Kento Momota play against Srikanth Kidambi of India.
After winning the Hong Kong Open last year, 31-year-old Son Wan-ho was doing well with good results until he got Achilles tendon injury in March. During his 6 months rest after the surgery, he missed many events and his world ranking has dropped from 6th to 16th. Sun returned to the court in October and was not listed as a seed player in the Hong Kong Open. He is going to have a hard battle in his first game playing against No. 1 seed Danish Viktor Axelsen. The two has met 11 times and Axelsen took a lead with 6 wins and 5 losses.
Another focus of Men’s Singles first round is the Japanese player Kento Momota who has already taken 9 titles this year. The World No.1 stopped at top 4 in last year’s Hong Kong Open is listed as No.1 seed. He will play against World No.10 Srikanth Kidambi of India. Momota has a lead with 12 wins and 3 losses in their previous encounters. However, he had a tough battle with Srikanth in April and needed to play until the final deciding game. Fans are expecting the same tough game between the two.
