Injury cannot stop the Spanish World No.1 player Carolina Marin from reaching top 8 of Women’s Singles in YONEX-SUNRISE Hong Kong Open Badminton Championships 2015.

Caroline Marin, the 2 time World Champion, reinjured her left ankle In the first game when she was leading 10:8 to Akane Yamaguchi of Japan and need to be taken out for treatment. However, the world No. 1 was non-stoppable and took out the 18-year-old Akane in 21:19, 21:8. Akane is a rising star in Japan and earned her name as a ‘Giant Slayer’ by beating big names like Wang Shixian and Li Xuerui of China this year.

Caroline will face Porntip Buranaprasertsuk of Thailand for a place in semi-finals tomorrow. She said the injury didn’t affect her at all. ‘I forgot my injury and concentrated on the game. That’s why I have finished it in 2 games. Akane is a young and tough player to play with. I am delighted about the victory.’ The 22-year-old player wished more European players can be nurtured to the top level of world badminton. She said, ‘I am very happy more badminton facilities were being built in Spain. More kids are learning the sports now. You can also watch badminton games on the TV. I am sure there will be more top players from Europe that are capable to compete against Asian players.’

In Men’s Singles second round, Chen Long of China reached top 8 with a 19:21, 21:8, 21:13 comeback over Boonsak Ponsana of Thailand. Defending champion Korea’s Son Wan Ho was stopped by Tian Houwei of China 13:21, 17:21.

Hong Kong was not doing well in the second round this morning. Chueng Ngan Yi lost to seed No.8 Wang Yihan of China 13:21,5:21 in Woman’s Singles. Tsang Wing Chiu Avery was beaten by Thai player Porntip Buranaprasertsuk 10:21, 15:21. In Mixed Doubles, Poon Lok Yan/Tang Chun Man was eliminated by Kenta Kazuno/Ayane Kurihara of Japan 17:21,14:21.
