YONEX-SUNRISE Hong Kong Open Badminton Championships 2015 started the first day (18 November) of main draw with unexpectedly results. Seed No.5 Li Xuerui was eliminated in first round of Women’s Single. The Chinese player just crowned as the champion in China Open last week, has lost to Japan’s young player Nozomi Okuhara by 0:2.

Li, World No. 7 player, was aiming to regain her title after 2012. However, her dream was shattered by the 20-year-old Japanese new star Nozomi Okuhara who has swept 4 golds this year including Malaysia Masters, China International Challenge, U.S. Open Championships and Japan Open. In the first game, the two were playing a see saw game. Nozoma won the game by 21:19 after Li snatched 4 points to a 19:19 tie. In the second game, Nozoma was playing more aggressively and sealed the deal by 21:9.

She was very excited after the victory and said,’ Li is a very strong player. However, she didn’t play well today. I have worked on the basics to reduce my mistakes. I wasn’t in a good shape during Denmark and French Open but now I have recovered. I can tell from my performance since China Open. ’ Nozoma made her way to top eight in the China Open.

In Women’s Doubles, Yu Yang/Tang Yuanting of China has smashed the Chinese Taipei pair Chiang Kai Hsin/Wu Fang Chien easily by 2:0. Yu said,’ the wind in Hong Kong Colisem is strong. Lots of the matches have to play all 3 games. I will overcome it by my experience and aim for the gold in this tournament.’

In Men’s Singles, seed No.1 Cheng Long has promoted to top 16 in no pressure by beating Ajy Jayaram of India 21-17, 21-12.
