Poon Lok Yan and Tse Ying Suet, the Hong Kong badminton women’s doubles, reunited in May to qualify for a place in the Rio Olympics after a year of separation. Their performance is more mature in which they have surprised the world by setting a world record of the longest rally in the Denmark Open last month. The London Olympics representatives would like to raise a few eyebrows again on their way to Rio!

Poon Lok Yan/Tse Ying Suet set the 4 minutes 31 seconds longest rally world record, with more than 250 strokes during the 2nd round playing against their Japanese rival Fukuman Naoko/Yonao Kurumi in the Denmark Open. The news became a hot topic in the world badminton forum. They have received a lot of encouraging messages from Hong Kong Fans.

Poon and Tse were surprised by this unexpected record. ‘I have no idea we set a world record until after the match. It was exhausting after the 4 and a half minutes rally.’ Poon recalled the situation. ‘During the last 2 minutes, I was dazed. Both teams just wanted to hang on and not lose the point.’

‘There are world records in cycling, running events. I could never imagine a world record in badminton and, I am the record holder.’ Tse added. Poon agreed the record had made them popular. ‘In badminton, women’s doubles is the event always being overlooked. This record gained more people’s attention. We received a lot of messages from fans.’ she said.

Poon Lok Yan/Tse Ying Suet had their Olympics debut in 2012. After 3 years, the two reunite and aim for the same goal. Tse said, ‘I think we both improved a lot. We communicate more on the court and solve problems together. ’To get the tickets of Olympics, Poon has suspended her study. She said this is arranged by Coach Chen Kang. ‘Coach Chen believes we have the chance to get into the Olympics again. So I decided to drop out of school and pick up my racket again. It was very hard when I first started the training. Now I am back in shape and hopefully we can get the ticket to the Olympics next year.’

Only World ranking top-16 players are eligible for participating in Women’s Doubles of Rio Olympics and the World Ranking Lists of 5 May 2016 will be used to allocate the quota places. Poon Lok Yan/Tse Ying Suet, with a current ranking of 25th, will take every opportunity to improve.

The old partners will play against No. 6 seed Lee So Hee/Chang Ye Na of Korea in the first round of YONEX-SUNRISE Hong Kong Open Badminton Championships 2015 next week. With all the event posters in the streets, Tse Ying Suet felt the intense atmosphere of the tournament. She said, ‘I hope we can improve our result with the support from home fans.’
