Tai Tzu Ying Clinched Her Third Hong Kong Open’s Women’s Singles Title

Tai Tzu Ying of Chinese Taipei clinched YONEX-SUNRISE 2017 Hong Kong Open Badminton Championships’ Women’s Singles title after straight-games victory over India’s Pusala V. Sindhu at the Hong Kong Coliseum. She became the first player successfully defended women’s singles title in the past 10 years.

Tai Tzu Ying, the world No.1 player is one of the Hong Kong fans’ flavor player. Her opponent world No.3 Pusala V. Sindhu also won the support from local fans. Tai took the first game with her aggressive smash by 21:18 after Sindhu chased to an 18:18 tie. In the second game, Sindhu was leading at the beginning. Tai reverted quickly and took a 6 points lead. Although Sindhu save 2 match points, she still could not stop the Chinese Taipei player from her victory and getting the US$30,000 prize money. There were only 3 players have successfully defend their Women’s Singles title. It was China’s Xie Xing Fang (2006, 2007), Zhang Ning (2003, 2005, the championships did not staged in 2004) and Korea’s Bang Soo Hyun (1994, 1995). This is also the third time Tai won the Women’s Singles title in Hong Kong Open (2014, 2016, 2017). She now stands with China’s Han Aiping, Xie Xing Fang and Korea’s Bang Soo Hyun, becomes the fourth player winning the most of Women’s Singles title in Hong Kong Open.

Tai said, ‘Hong Kong is blessed land to me. I will come again next year. I look forward to the cheering from the fans every time I play here.’ This is the fifth title in 2017, Tai concluded her achievement and said, ‘I have more stable performance this year. In the past, I always win a game and lost the other. It’s good to be stable than take a lot of titles.’ Therefore, she didn’t set any target in the Superseries Finals. Due to fight schedule, Tai will stay in Hong Kong for one more night. The food lover said, ‘It’s good that I have another night to try the great food.’

In Mixed Doubles final, Seed 5 China’s Zheng Siwei/Huang Yaqiong finished the match in 35 minutes and beat Denmark’s Mathias Christiansen/Christinna Pedersen by 21:15, 21: 13. This was the second title the Chinese pair lifted in this month after Macau Grand Prix Gold. They also received US$31,600 prize money.

In Men’s Doubles final, seed 1 Indonesia’s Marcus Fernaldi Gideon/Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo won the match in 37 minutes by 21:12, 21: 18 against Denmark’s Mads Conrad-Petersen/Mads Pieler Kolding.
